Episode 2: Zurich — Germany
Zurich is a city in Switzerland and the capital of the canton of Zurich. Its name is derived from the Romansh words *Zhur* meaning thunder and *Zur* meaning. As the first capital of the Swiss Confederates, it was the place where the first federal parliament was convened, which in turn made Zurich the country's first federal state.
In addition to its long history, Zurich is a culturally diverse city with over 164,000 people living in the city and more than 300 languages spoken. Since its foundation, Zurich has been the country's financial and economic centre, and remains a significant centre for banking, commerce, insurance, finance, and industry. As such, the city is a major European banking centre and also ranks amongst the world's top 500 cities by the number of financial activities.
Zurich is particularly famous for its many consulates and embassies, as well as its private banks and financial services companies, such as UBS. Zurich is also known for its many festivals, especially for its cultural scene. Among the most popular events are the Hard- and the Soft-Openings in September and the Parade of Theatre. Zurich hosts the world's largest arts festival, the World Economic Forum. The city is also one of the world's highest-grossing destinations for tourism.
In 2013 Zurich was ranked number 5th on the Global be359ba680
